06-24-09 : Italian scientists show that even good quality silage can develop clostridia contamination at feedout

Clostridia, or butyric bacteria, contamination in silage is always a source of financial loss for the farmer, either due to dry matter loss or even financial penalties on milk prices in certain cheese-making areas. A recently published study (Borreani et al., Journal of Applied Microbiol., 2009) shows that, even when the analysis of fresh silage shows low clostridia count, the silage can become heavily contaminated at feedout, due to aerobic instability, a phenomenon that can easily go unnoticed as long as analysis are performed on fresh silage.

03-30-09 : Pig liquid feed management practices: to ferment or not to ferment ?

Dispositif

Over 200 experts and professionals of pig production from France, Europe and Asia gathered last November in Brittany (France), for a technical seminar focused on liquid feeding.

Speakers from diverse but complementary fields from academia, industry and the field, helped us review the concepts and practices of liquid feeding and fermented liquid feed. The main objective of the day, as Yannig Le Treut, Commercial Director of Lallemand Animal Nutrition, reminded the audience, was not to provide a perfect formula but to look at some new ideas and directions, based on examples such as the Danish experience. The meeting was also the opportunity to introduce the first results of ProbioMAS, a unique research partnership between academia and industry whose objective is to improve the quality of liquid feed.
