11-15-07 : Lallemand Milwaukee Bacteria plant earns ISO 9001 and FAMI-QS certifications

Lallemand aligns its US production facilities with the strictest EU quality requirements

Lallemand Animal Nutrition announces that Lallemand Specialties, Milwaukee Operations, successfully completed ISO 9001:2000 and FAMI-QS (Feed Additives and Premixtures Quality System) audits of the Lallemand bacterial facility in Milwaukee, WI. As the international feed market becomes increasingly regulated, these new certifications represent a significant accomplishment demonstrating the commitment of Lallemand in offering its customers the highest quality standards, as recently recognized by the European Union*.

Lallemand’s Milwaukee bacteria facility produces probiotic bacteria (Bactocell®) and silage inoculants (Lalsil® range) for animal nutrition applications, amongst a range of other products. It is the first site outside the European Union to receive FAMI-QS accreditation.

Lallemand’s other FAMI-QS and ISO 9001:2000 accredited sites include the bacterial production facilities at Saint-Simon (France), the yeast production plants at Vienna (Austria) and Grenaa (Denmark), as well as Lallemand Animal Nutrition headquarters, in Blagnac (France). All of these Lallemand manufacturing sites are also certified to other relevant quality standards such as AIB, AFIA SFSF, AFSSAPS Pharma, NHPD, HC, IFS, HACCP.

FAMI-QS code of practice and certification aims to ensure the safety of feed additives and premixtures, the harmonization in the EU of feed hygiene requirements, and improve traceability.

FAMI-QS Guide integrates the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) concept, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ISO 9001 requirements.

ISO 9000 is maintained by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization and is administered by accreditation and certification bodies. Some of the requirements in ISO 9001 (which is one of the standards in the ISO 9000 family) include:

  • a set of procedures that cover all key processes in the business;
  • monitoring processes to ensure they are effective;
  • keeping adequate records;
  • checking output for defects, with appropriate corrective action where necessary;
  • regularly reviewing individual processes and the quality system itself for effectiveness; and
  • facilitating continual improvement

* Earlier this year, the European Union’s Standing Committee on Animal Nutrition has recognized the FAMI-QS Code of Practice as a community guide for feed business operators, intending to meet requirements of the EC Feed Hygiene Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 183/2005 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 January 2005 laying down requirements for feed hygiene).
