07-09-08 : Fattening pig: get ready for the summer

bactocell_200_1.gifSummer is a high risk period in fattening pig farms. Hot weather is often linked to outbreaks of sudden death, or hemorrhagic bowel syndrome (HBS), which can account for up to one-third of total fattening mortality. HBS causes the sudden death of 4-6 month-old animals (70-120 Kg). Usually, there is no clinical or pathological previous history, and no premonitory signs that could alert the farmer. The advanced development stage and otherwise good condition of the affected animals make preventive measures an economic necessity.

When the temperature rises, both feed hygiene and animal behavior are affected, with consequences on the pig digestive health.
