01-07-08 : Unique Live Yeast Product granted approval by CFIA
Levucell® SC, rumen specific yeast, is now approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) (Registration numbers 982800, 982801, 982802, and T982803) for use in beef feeding programs. The claim allowed is “Increases average daily gain when fed as directed” to beef cattle.
Beef trials demonstrated an 8% increase in the daily average weight gain. Moreover, when animals were submitted to high stress (intensive farming conditions), morbidity was reduced from 17% to 3% when supplemented with Levucell SC. Improvement in meat quality was also noticed with a 50% increase in highest carcass grade. These efficacy studies cover a large range of conditions including different environments, diets, farming conditions and breeds.
The CFIA approved the use of Levucell in dairy cows in 2002. The approved claim “increases production when fed as directed” was based on dairy trials showing increases in milk production ranging from 3.45 to 5.25 lbs/hd/day.
Lallemand was granted permanent authorization from the European Commission (authorization number E1711) for Levucell SC as a feed additive for dairy and beef cattle, goats and sheep. Authorization has been granted for both formulations of Levucell SC: Levucell SC 20 (20.109 CFU/g ) for milled feed and Levucell SC 10ME for pelleted applications. The authorization covers performance claims of increase in milk and meat quantities, quality being unaltered. This definitive authorization is the ultimate recognition from the European Community that guarantees the identity, safety and efficacy of the specific yeast to the farmers.
In addition, Levucell® SC-20 rumen specific yeast, is “approved for organic agriculture by GarantieBio-Ecocert” for use in natural and/or organic production. It is also compatible with traditional feeding systems: beef and dairy trials show feeding Levucell SC with Monensin presents a synergistic effect in terms of stimulating fiber degradability and further improved feed efficiency.
Levucell SC, rumen specific yeast, contains Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain CNCM 1077 selected from thousands of yeast strains for its ability to enhance rumen efficiency, rumen health and performance. Field experience has proven the ability of Levucell SC to stabilize rumen pH, lower the risk of acidosis, increase feed digestion in the rumen and improve anaerobic (oxygen-free) conditions. Ultimately, this means improved rumen health, increased milk production and a lower incidence of acidosis related problems – the bottom line for dairy producers.
In addition, there are over 30 animal research trials around the world covering a wide range of diet parameters, from corn silage to mixed forages or pasture and low or high concentrate levels.
